Each night, Dylan Higgins would weave a tale of adventure and excitement for his two young children. As the tale grew, so did Higgins’ ardor to put his story down on paper.
And so it came to be that the nighttime story has already been published in book one of a four-part series called the Emblem and the Lantern.
“I thought it would be fun to have a story about them,” Higgins said of his children Ethan, 6, and Eisley, 4.
The first book, “Awakening” was published in December 2010 and Higgins is already chapters deep into the second book.
Described as a fantasy fiction adventure/iconic hero’s quest book that is in the same vein as The Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the book has already sold 500 copies.
Higgins took the self-publishing route, using Amazon’s Createspace to do so. The book is printed as it’s ordered online through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Books-A-Million.
A unique addition to the book is it has its own soundtrack.
Sleepy Turtles is the folk band that formed to create the soundtrack, and is named after one of the chapters in “Awakening.”
In the book, Ethan and Eisley sing songs on their journey, and Higgins wanted to bring them to life.
“Tolkien did that, but you never know what they sound like,” he said.
And as for the children’s thoughts on having their own book?
“They think it’s awesome,” he said.
Higgins teaches 10th-grade world history, 11th-grade U.S. history and 12th-grade government and economics at The Campus in Peachtree City. He is also the pastor of creative arts at Crosspoint Community Church.
Keeping so many plates spinning can be a challenge, he said.
“It’s tough,” Higgins said. “Clearly the family is first, but I manage my time well.”
